Originally from Miami, FL, Ricardo Zapata is an interdisciplinary artist currently living and working in Philadelphia, PA. He received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He currently teaches at Tyler School of Art and Pennsylvania State University in Abington.
Ricardo’s studio practice manifests work in painting, drawing and sculpture that finds common aesthetic ground in the use of representation, text, and the fracturing of space and from. He is concerned with notions of power struggle, displacement, transgression, and anxiety. He considers these issues through the investigations of current and historical events and the history of urbanism, activism, and colonialism.
