AN/OTHER/ONE is the continuation of Kyle’s playful experimentation of imagery and material transformation. Through the recycling and recontextualizing of images, objects, and materials in each work, he proposes the question of how one defines the world around oneself. Can an eraser be fire? Can foam be a stone? Is a pencil wood, graphite, and a painted surface or something to make a mark with? These altering combinations of what is seen, what it is made of, and what it is doing raise the ontological question of what actually determines what something is. Is it material composition? What we perceive? Its usability, intent, or how it interacts with the world? What is the minimum amount of information or transformation needed for one thing to be recognizable or become an/other thing entirely?
Kyle Choy is a California born, Nebraska raised, Philly based artist. He received the painting fellowship at Tyler School of Art and Architecture earning his MFA in 2022 and his BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2013. A fan of sci-fi, fantasy, and metaphysics; his work is fundamentally grounded in play, storytelling, and an ongoing meta-narrative through object making and material exploration.
