Side Quest is a reference to the enduring practice an artist undertakes while simultaneously  tending to the endless possibilities and never-ending responsibilities of modern life. The artist’s sensibility is pervasive, showing up in all facets of the day-to-day, yet it is the time spent fully embodying the creative spirit that persuades the individual maker to endure.Side Quest is a little adventure that you go on while on a bigger adventure. It’s the human desire and natural compulsion to push ourselves and seek continued expansion.

In this exhibition, artists Leslie Friedman and Tamsen Wojtanowski explore self-care, or self-nuturing, through ideas of friendship, nature, escape and play. Working with print as their point of origin, each artist explores the many variations of the process of print and the ways in which it might collaborate with other mediums or presentations, such as drawing, painting, fiber art, and installation. The works created contain delicate moments therein, but are resoundingly substantial in their use of material, commanding in their use of space, muscular in their application of color.

Leslie Friedman is an artist and educator who specializes in printmaking, sculpture, and installation. She has a BA in political theory from Brown University and an MFA in printmaking from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. In 2014, Friedman completed a fellowship at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists and won the Fleisher Wind Challenge. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally with some highlights including solo shows at Space 1026 in Philadelphia, Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington.
